The Route Overview

The trek starts from Dudhia on the Balason river around 20 kilometres from Siliguri. Trekkers have to walk along the Siliguri-Mirik road for a distance of 15 kilometres to reach Tingling which is 9 kilometres away from Mirik. One has the option to take short muddy paths in between to cut short the distance. The road most of the time is not as steep as the Pankhabari road. Traffic is sparse compared to the Siliguri-Darjeeling routes and you will feel a sense of isolation amidst pristine nature that makes the hike pleasant. The majestic views of the Balason valley below and of Kurseong across the valley are breath-taking especially if it’s a clear sunny day. At Tingling you get to see the western side of the hill marked by lush green tea gardens and small villages in Nepal.

    The Tingling View Point is the most attractive viewpoint on the road to Mirik. It is on top of the hill offering a 360 degree view of lush green tea estates, the Balason river valley in the east and the Mechi river valley in Nepal in the west. Across the Balason valley, one can get a clear view of Kurseong.

    Also known as Kawlay Dara Viewpoint, Tingling Viewpoint provides an amazing view of the Mirik Lake and also the beautiful Mechi river valley. The sprawling, green tea estates set against white snow peaks in the north during winter offers a wonderful contrast. The sunrise and sunset at Tingling Viewpoint is worth capturing in camera.

2. Neatly Spruced Tea Gardens Past Small Green Woods
The entire stretch from Dudhia to Tingling Viewpoint is lined by scenic tea gardens on undulating hill sides. Some of these tea gardens are Phuguri Tea Estate, Singbuli Tea Estate, Soureni Tea Estate, Tingling Tea Estate and Millikthung Tea Estate. The gentle, laid back ambience of the tea gardens sometimes dotted with tea workers at the distance plucking leaves brings a sense of peace and tranquility that can never be imagined in cities.

3. Panoramic View of the Balason Valley and Kurseong Town
As you climb up from Dudhia, you will see the Balason river below. The further you go up, the more panoramic becomes the view of the river valley on thr right. On a clear day you can clearly see Kurseong up and across the Balason valley located at 4000 plus feet. The view of Bungkulung in the midst of the Balason valley below Ambootia is another marvelous view that will enthrall you.



  1. Orange Plantations
    Along with Sitong, Mirik is known for its orange plantations in Darjeeling district. As you walk up towards Tingling, you will see plenty of orange trees and in November and December you can see the the oranges ready to be plucked. During winter time, the local inhabitant may allow you to pluck a few oranges from trees near the road side. It’s an experience you will remember for long.

    Just like anywhere in the Darjeeling hills, the local people you will meet on the trek from Dudhia to Tingling Viewpoint are super friendly. A smile is all you need to strike a friendly chord with them. You can stop for tea and some local snacks on the small road side huts. The warmth and hospitality of the locals will make you feel that you have to go back again and again.

Best Time to Visit: The ideal time to embark on this trek is between October and April when the weather is cool, and the skies are clear.
