Khecheopalri Lake is a holy glacial lake at an altitude of 1,799 metres in West Sikkim, believed to have been formed by ancient glaciers over 3,500 years ago. Shaped almost like a volcano crater and surrounded by thick wooded hills on all sides, the lake looks like a landscape from a fairy tale. Located between Gyalshing and Yuksum, approximately 147 km from Gangtok and 34 km from Pelling, Khecheopalri is one of the most beautiful and spiritually significant lakes in Sikkim.

The Sacred Significance of Khecheopalri Lake
The lake is believed to be sacred by both Buddhists and Hindus. Much like the Ganges is revered in Hindu tradition, Khecheopalri is considered a wishing lake — local communities believe that all sincere wishes made here are fulfilled. A Gompa (monastery) stands at the entrance to the lake, adding to the spiritual atmosphere of the site.
What makes Khecheopalri truly remarkable is the behaviour of its birds: birds in the area are said to protect the sanctity of the lake by carrying away any leaf or twig that drifts onto its calm, placid surface. The green and clear waters, combined with this extraordinary natural phenomenon, make it one of the most serene and awe-inspiring places in Sikkim.
